I'm currently living with my parents and my gear isn't fully covered. I am a BMC member, however, does my membership include climbing gear insurance? If not, what other options do I have?

In reply to Jackwd:

BMC membership only gives you third party insurance (i.e. if you knock a rock off and it hits some innocent bystander and they sue you.) If your parents have contents insurance for their house your gear is probably covered by that, check the details though.

Thanks, they do have contents insurance, but it'll only cover a small amount of my gears total cost for some reason. I think it's classed as specialist equipment.

Easiest thing to do would be to give the current contents insurers a ring and see if they'll cover all of your gear for a little extra cost.

Having spoken to my Home/content insurers climbing equip could be insured for use away from home ,ie if it gets stolen from huts/cars crags but....is expensive cover AND all kit needs to be inventoried. cover for just keeping at home should be possible for small extra cost ,to cover personal possessions to a value.

Most household policies I've come across include sports equipment. However policies distinguish between 'contents' which won't be removed from the home (eg furniture) and 'personal possessions' which need to be covered when away from home - this includes valuables such as jewelry and cameras, and also most sports equipment. The premium will be higher than for the equivalent value of contents because the risk of it being lost, damaged or stolen is higher.
