I would be grateful for recommendations of a book to get me going with Lightroom - of the "for dummies" end of the market rather than lengthy, advanced and comprehensive which the Amazon top scorers all seem to be. Just really want to edit and collect photos, brush out spots, crop etc and then gradually learn the more subtle sorting skies out, balances, hues, shadows and whatever - but I don't want to do the equivalent of a flippin degree course

All due respect to Nicholas Livesey, I found Scott Kelby OK but he left me unsatisfied pretty quickly. He got me started, but I felt there was a lot he didn't explain, and I wanted to understand why I was doing what he was suggesting. I also found his style pretty annoying.

If you understand what you are doing you can make Lightroom - which is an amazng piece of software - a tool of which you are master. So, I'd strongly recommend Jeff Schewe's "The Digital Negative" (which is way shorter than Kelby) and after that Martin Evening's Adobe Lr Handbook.

If you can deal with the double act of Reichmann and Schewe, then you will learn a lot from these videos ($25):

You could just Youtube it. I've picked up plenty of LR and CS tips off it.

Google Lightroom AJ Wood, he's excellent at explaining things.

Also, this woman explains things superbly

Michael Clark's ebook is pretty good, if you get on with ebooks. He is a climbing/ adventure photographer so it is a bit more relevant than the mainstream ones which tend to be full of portraits.

Thanks for the responses - will have a look through Amazon. Do the Kelby books operate at different levels ie allow skimming for basic function without havering to go through the whole detail of each section to learn even the basic task

Look on the Adobe website - there are lots of tutorials there including by Julieanne Kost (mentioned by Chris Fox above) - http://tv.adobe.com/channel/how-to/lightroom-tutorials/. I've used both the Scott Kelby and Martin Evening guides to various Adobe products(PS Elements & LR) - Kelby's the best to get going on but his style is a bit too jokey for some; Evening is more thorough but still readable. I'd get something from my local library!
In reply to Adam Long:
+1 for Michael's book. I'd highly recommend it.

I got the e-book printed at a local printers.
