Can you suggest what caused this collapse?

My guess is that it is more likely to have been rain peculating down cracks behind the cliff face rather than sea erosion to the foot of the glacis running down from the foot of the cliff?

In reply to Trangia: I'm not a soil engineer, but I expect a slip-plane has formed between two different rock types. For example water seeping down through sandstone onto mudstone would likely cause something of that nature, and I understand it's a fairly common mechanism by which coastal landslips occur.

Thanks for that. I hadn't heard about the Kedarnath disaster in June. Very sad - I was there in 1989 at the end of our expedition to Gangotri.
