Running in the Cold

I've had some issues this winter with my airway and lower jaw really aching when I run in windy or cold conditions. Other than covering my face with a buff (which means breathing is harder and only makes a small difference), I've not really come up with anything to lessen this effect.

Does anyone else struggle with this? or have any ideas how to combat it?

What do you call "cold"?

Most of my running is done on roads and tracks in the countryside, usually in the later hours of the evening.

Soooo, erm... 0 - 10 Celsius is probably about right for this time of year?

Winds never more than about 30 mph at the worst.

Try a neoprene running mask, they do the trick. Not as restrictive as a buff.

So over here it gets down a lot colder but the air is also very very dry. I usually won't run or ride below -10 celcius but this also depends on the wind and the sun.

I've not experienced specific issues with airway or lower jaw but my lungs certainly know when I've been running in the cold. I tend to slow down a bit at those temps also.

In reply to MarkRoe: If a hat plus buff on neck not ok, I'd try a balaclava. U shud b able to find one with a small face hole so it covers ur chin but leaves mouth free
