Mrs. Sore and I are going the the lakes for a couple of days next weekend and would like to stop for a nice, not too expensive, lunch en route. Anyone know a good venue within about five or ten minutes of the M6 between, say, Preston and Penrith? Tebay services is on the shortlist but I'd like to clear the motorway if possible.

Only 5 minutes from the M6 and the food is pretty good

Can't remember the name of the pub, but if you come off at preston - it's the second exit, signposted A59 - Blackburn. Head right - away from Preston. about half a mile up the road, at the top of the hill there's a big junction. Go right there, and about 300 yards further on, opposite Samlesbury aerodrome, there's a pub that does pretty good food.

Right on the Motorway junction is the Tickled trout hotel. Never been there, but maybe worth checking them out too?

'Old Nells' at Guys thatched hamlet. Come off the M6 at 32 and follow the A6 northwards to Lancaster, the A6 runs next to the M6 between JN 32 and 33, Old Nells is about half way <7 miles from each JN> its a pub with good real ale, bar food and restaunt/hotel next to the Lancaster canal. Good parking and not out of the way.

That would be the Boddington Arms.

The Nabs Head is nice too, (The Nabs Head, Nab's Head Ln Preston, Lancashire PR5 0UQ, turn right opposite Salmsbury Hall)

Possibly a bit near Penrith (and may be a bit pricey), but this place is nice:

The woman who runs the Tebay café received an honour for her work in the new year honours list last week.

Bit biased but come off at Charnock Richard service, you can leave the motorway via the services and head into Eccleston, it's about 5 mins drive and my family have a pub that does great food, it's the original farmers arms and real ales also

Strickland Arms, Sizergh.

Close to J36 M6 junction, just south of Kendal.

only about 2 minutes off the M6 is the nature reserve at Brockholes. It has some nice short walks, a nice restaurant/cafe on the floating buildings overlooking the bird reserve. Your money goes to to support the local wildlife trust also. Miles better than a service station for sure!

Cheers
