Sunset over 'The Egg', 3 kb

Yangshuo is a new destination to climbers, but with it's high quality climbing, wide variety of styles, stunning scenery and the added positives of being a little off the beaten track and culturally very different, it is gaining popularity with more and more climbers heading there. Tom Skelhon gives a little more information on why Yangshuo is a must-visit area...

Very interesting - what an intriguing place! Would be great to have more destination articles for such out of the way, little know areas.

Only suggestion is to put a red circle round the correct green dot on the map or get rid of the other green dot which is just North of North Korea, as otherwise is isn't clear which one it is.

Also been there climbing. Awesome place and had a great time. Even if not climbing theres loads to do. We cycled up to a place called Dragon River Bridge or something like that and caught a bamboo raft down some of the river then got lost. Wouldn't say it's off the beaten track though, but still a fgreat place

Could you pop in a section about travelling to and fro crags? What is the recommended?

easiest way to get around is by hiring a bike or scooter. If you're here for more than a month it's wise to just buy a bike for about 30 pound and then sell it back at the end of your trip. There are buses which will take you to moon hill or near lei pi for really cheap. otherwise most crags are within a half hour cycle

Not sure if I just missed it in the article, but what type of rock is it? Limestone I presume?

Memory lane. I lived there for a year, 2006/7. Great place, good times

Two ways to do it.

1. Either catch the local buses that connect Yangshuo to the surrounding villages.

2. Hire a bike and cycle there.

The bus is easier but the bikes are better, if you can find the way.

I am sitting in a cafe in Yangshuo as I write this. A few tips I've picked up are:

1) Buying a moped is very easy and costs around £100.

2) Finding an apartment is not that easy, but hotels do offer month long deals for around £150 a month.

3) 70+m rope required for many routes and lots of QDs.

4) Be prepared for some very polished routes.

5) Finding partners seems pretty easy and Climbers Inn a good place to start.

6) Very few bookshops in town so bring your own.

Think that's it.
