Has anyone use the BD Vipers with Titan picks on euroice?

I'm guessing they will smash the ice up a little more especially if its been really cold and the ice is brittle, I guess I'm asking is it really worth buying the Laser picks too?

Thanks,
Stevo

I few of my friends use titan picks for Scandihooligan ice, without much problems.

I think the best course of action would be to file the tip of the pick to resemble the one from Laser and call it good.

So from left to what is on right:

Its also the width of the tip (ie the thickness of the sheet of metal at the tip). With my old quark picks the mixed T pick was more the shape of the pic on the right and the ice B pick more the shape of the pic on the left (so the opposite way around), yet the T pick had a much thicker width of tip and broke up the ice a lot more!

Yes, they are wider, but main culprits were the shape and the guy wielding the tools (ie. swing).

See here the shape of the old quark mixed / ice picks is the opposite way around to the Viper Laser / Titan

I think the thickness of the sheet of metal of the tip is more important than the shape. Certainly the better shaped for ice quark T picks are no where near as good on ice than the quark B picks

In a word no, unless the ice is very brittle... then nothing will make much difference. The only real problems I imagine you will encounter will probably be when it comes to getting it out again, due to the thickness and lack of a taper (present frustration with my fusions).

But as others have said, the tip design looks a bit shit for ice really , I would be tempted to file it to the same, more rounded profile as the fusion or laser picks.

And just to add to my frustration it would appear BD have brought out new ice specific picks for their fusion tools, typical after just buying a whole new set of lasers.

Hi Stevo

Used the titans in morocco last year to climb multi-pitch ice. Found the ice to be quite hard at approx. 3200m compared to say Scotland. Think this was probably due to no freeze thaw cycles?

Picks were ok on grade III/IV ground, so nothing epic. Normally got away with a tap and 1 thwack!

Tim my climbing partner broke one of his picks which was mildly amusing!

Well, at least my the shape does play a role. Friend was plating a lot with stock Titans (on Vipers) and after filing them the following day, a lot less plating/shattering. Temps had been constant the whole week and similar icefalls, so at least for him it was the shape.

But if you're uncertain, get laser picks and be done with it.

Ps. Some people have thinned the tip of Titans as well.
