Why do manufacturers of climbing pants go to all the trouble of articulated crotches, stretchy fabric, etc - all designed to make for freedom of movement - and then cover the things with pockets?

Can anyone suggest a make of climbing pant that's stretchy, preferably with an elasticated waist, and no pockets (or maybe just one)? In other words a design optimised for climbing with a harness on.

Montura Vertigo's should suit ya... And Mello's also made a rather nice climbing "spandex" with only one pocket...

Ron Hills fit the bill perfectly.

Warning, generally worn by Those of an older generation. Crag cool may be impaired

I have some Mountain Hardwear (non-stretchy, but good enough cut) and Marmot (stretchy) ones that would suit you - only have "normal" pockets.

I also generally hate the combat look ones, although I bought a pair of TNF ones in a sale as travel trousers that have pockets on the pockets - bought as travel trouses, so space to put plane tickets and passport and not need a money belt-type thing.

Like these on sale in go-outdoors http://www.gooutdoors.co.uk/ronhill-mens-trackster-trek-running-tights-p949...

Although they probably won't have any of the required size in when you go to the shop...

Patagonia Knifeblade pants. Only one pocket, and it's down low on the upper thigh out of the way of your harness. http://www.patagonia.com/us/product/mens-knifeblade-pants?p=83280-0

am I missing something or can you just find a decent, comfy pair of trousers and not put anything in the pockets

I have a pair of outdoor research insulated waterproofs that are really well cut and I use for winter climbing. They have 3 pockets but they dont have any bulk and dont cause issues with harnesses.

Could you unpick the pocket stitching, or have a professional remove them for you?

It mightn't cost a lot.

Its probably something to do with the demographic of people who need to buy specialist 'pants' to climb in.

Cheap tracksuit bottoms from Tesco, then give the rest of the money you would have spent to the third world.

Or, to upgrade The Pylon King's good suggestion, buy them second hand from Oxfam then Tesco doesn't win either.
