Off out for my Birthday treat and I can't make my mind up on which of the two films to watch this evening?

Which of the two is bestest to watch this evening?

Cheers muchly

In reply to The Lemming:

What did you end up seeing? I have only seen one of those two (and I thought it was a bit "meh") so I was unable to make a recommendation (also, I have only just seen your post).

Happy Birthday anyway.

Just got back in from the Cinema and I have to say that I plumped for the Wolf. I have to admit, but its been a long time since I belly laughed through a film and DiCaprio deserves an Oscar for the way he got into hs White Ferrari half way through the film. You'll know the bit when you see it.

In fact, everybody put in a Stirling performance. DiCaprio was head and shoulders above everybody else, which surprised me as I never thought he could act his way out of a pretty-boy paper bag.

Excellent film and even though I like my money's worth with a good long screening, my back and bum got a bit numb.

Funniest Cert 18 in a long time.

The thought of putting money in Jordon Belfort's pockets, or indeed the celebration of misdeeds really puts me off going to see this film. I think I'll wait for Bernie Madoff the Musical!

In reply to The New NickB:

Did you boycott GoodFellas and Catch Me If You Can and every other "true" film based on "misdeeds"?
 Mike Stretford 23 Jan 2014
In reply to The Lemming: American Hustle is the better film IMHO.

In reply to Blue Straggler:

I actually tried to edit my post, but UKC wouldn't play. I would of added 'his' before misdeeds. As for the other two films, I have not paid to watch either of them. In fact I don't think I have seen Catch Me If You Can.

With anything you make a judgement on an individual basis and based on what you feel at that time, judgement may not be consistent throughout a lifetime, we are human after all.

In reply to The New NickB:

OK.

Does Jordan Belfort receive a cut of profits from the film about him? I would assume that he received a flat fee for book rights so that none of the price of my ticket goes his way...but I'll merrily admit that I don't really know how these things work, maybe you know better.

 Blue Straggler 23 Jan 2014
In reply to The New NickB:

Self-correction, Belfort was on set and even appears in the film. Though I imagine that, still, he won't get any cut of profits

American Hustle. Saw it last night and didn't want it to end. By contrast, two reviewers who I trust say that although "Wolf" is initially entertaining, by the time it has wittered on for three hours, you just want the ground to open up and drag all these twerps into it, along with yourself.

Yeah, Wolf starts well but drags on for too long..... seems to be happening a lot nowadays. There's a good reason films used to be around 2 hours.

I thought American Hustle dragged on INTERMINABLY for the last 30 minutes (with several false promises of "this is the end", a la The Return of the King!) and overall I didn't think much of it because the plot wasn't that engaging (it just meandered around, and a quick peep at imdb.com reveals WHY this happened) and there were no characters to root for. Adams and Bale's performances compensated for this though. And Renner's. But "that" cameo was so signposted and trite that it really spoiled things.

I will probably see The Wolf of Wall Street this weekend

Agreed. My arse had gone to sleep about half way through that film.

Way too long.

I took a 50/50 guess but American Hustle is next on my hit list.

Cheers

I'd agree with that. The film is great but it does drag on too long, by about one hour in my opinion.

I enjoyed American Huslte, but do see were your criticisms are come from ( though I do consider you a harsh critic).

However, based on what you've said I'd wait for the Wolf to come out on dvd...... it terms of 'interminably' it's on par with Return of the King, which I don't think American Hustle is.

Four characters providing voiceover narration tends to signify a disorganised screenplay

In reply to Blue Straggler: Actually, go see the Wolf...... I look forward to your review!

Yeah I will probably whinge about it but I have not seen a Scorsese film in the cinema since The Departed (and I have only seen that one plus The Aviator and Casino, in the cinema). Bad film buff...

went to see wws the other nite ,not a prude by any means of the imagination but thought the sex scenes did nothing for the film ,the story was ok ,capriccio is obviously a good actor but the film did nothing for me ,I love martin scorceses direction and hes directed some great films casino.goodfellas etc but this film was embarrassing distasteful, and if I hadn't paid all that money and had company would have walked out and gone for a pint.a waste of my hard earned money.marks out of 10 .....3 crap

We saw Wolf... yesterday, having seen American Hustle last weekend. I found them both rather disappointing. Wolf was possibly slightly more entertaining, but my abiding memory of both was feeling a kind of apathy. The lack of any characters that I "liked" (admittedly simplistic analysis)* made it difficult for me to give monkeys about the outcome in both cases.

But that's just my tuppence worth.

I think I was possibly spoiled by having seen 12 Years a Slave a week earlier, which I thought was sad, gruesome, brutal and absolutely brilliant... and infinitely more compelling than AH or WOWS.

* the exception being Matthew McConaughey in the first 10/15 mins of WOWS.

That wasn't a Ferrari. I thought you were into cars and Top Gear and all that?

I liked the film despite its obvious obstacles (no likeable characters blah blah) and the distracting parallels with GoodFellas. It is long but not numbingly so, there were only two little lulls and there's only one scene that I would have entirely removed. It transcends its running time by having typically pacy Thelma Schoonmaker editing. McConaughey was very Rob Brydon in his short role and I am sure that was Alan Partridge doing the voiceover for the yacht advert

In reply to Papillon:

"Wolf" is more than 30 mins longer than American Hustle but American Hustle's final 30 minutes was more interminable than Wolf's final hour (times are estimated, I now deliberately don't wear a watch to the cinema and I actually turn my phone off just so that I don't keep peeping at the time)
