Hi,

Just after a little bit of advice while I try and find a physio who can help...

When hanging on medium to small holds, I occasionally get pain on the outside of my wrist. It doesn't seem to happen on larger holds or on a pull up bar.

Has anyone had anything similar, or can offer suggestions on how to treat it?

Cheers

You need to be a bit more specific. is it on the little finger side or the thumb side? If on the little finger or ulnaris side then I have had some relief using a rubber band round all the ends of my fingers and expanding my hand against it. Do this a lot.

I'm not saying that this is the case for you but all my wrist injuries have been caused by using a mouse and keyboard.

Do you also have pain whilst engaging the outer ligament and rotating, or whilst the wrist is under duress and rotating?

It could be anything from a micro fracture, to a strain of ligament or anything in between. The wrist area is such a complex part of the body, with lots of bones and ligaments. Get to your GP ASAP!!

I currently am at my forth specialist after being referred all over the NHS for such an injury. They still have no idea what is up, and maybe looking to microscopic inspection. I've been waiting for a full diagnosis for over a year!

Going to see a sports physio would be best bet. Tubigrip or splint on the wrist at night can help support to aid in tissue repair in the meantime. Taking a look at how you use the wrist when you climb can be helpful - maybe it is not alligned in the same way as the non painful side etc.

Cheers for the replies, I suspect it's something to do with the position, but I can't seem to isolate the exact position that causes pain.

Last night, no problem hanging from small edges, but I will book an appointment with the GP and see if they can refer me to someone...
