Since my hybrid winter bike is temporarily out of commission because I have completely worn out the gears/chain, I have been riding my old Raleigh Randonneur. I think I bought this around 1994 and while it's still a great bike, I am beginning to suffer from number_of_bikes_needed = number_of_bikes_owned +1 syndrome.

Also, I want to do some more touring this year now the children are old enough to come along. I know nothing at all about modern touring bikes, so what would be the equivalent new bike?

For anyone who doesn't know about Randonneurs here is a link: http://www.retrobike.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?p=923143

look at Edinburgh bike cooperative for a good range including there own brand bikes, very good.

I agree the Randonneurs were great bikes, happy hunting

Probably this is a modern version:-

or perhaps a slightly sportier version:-

There are specialist ones on the market that cost an arm and a leg.

For a fast/light modern tourer check out the Jamis offerings sold by Evans Cycles. I got an Aurora Elite last year and I'm delighted with it. Retro styling and well specced for the money.

I have a thorn. By far the best bike I have ever owned.
