Any news from the Cairngorms?

Routes it?
Routes to avoid?

Snow hole locations in?

Any Beta would be appreciated

Grim forecast.........at the risk of sounding a bit negative.

Yeah I thought that............ But how grim?
Tim Chappell 30 Jan 2014
In reply to Little Billy:
Reet grim. Proper grim. I'm afraid it's a take-up-knitting forecast.

The good side is, there's industrial quantities of snow on the hills, and it just keeps coming. The problem is to get at it without being blown away (literally).

So, you don't object to "the Gorms" then?

A little consistency, that's all I'm asking
 JohnnyW 31 Jan 2014
In reply to Little Billy:

As grim as a grim thing from Grimsville.

So grim, I have planned to head South to the Lake District to walk, in a vain attempt to stave off cabin fever....and now the forecast is awful for both days down there too

'Storm force wind reducing to gales.....' - Is that weak optimism?

Shouldn't it be The Gorm? (sic)

I do. As annoying as "The Coe", "The Ben" (which one FFS), and, just for you "the Shee". And don't get me started on "Meggy".

How about Fort Bill? Yuck.

Yes, arguably more abhorrent than "The Fort". No, unarguably.

Nope, there's Derry Cairngorm (Càrn Gorm an Doire) too

Oh come on Robert Durran (lest I am chastised for calling you "Rob" ). I mean, there's worse - "The Norries" for example.

Could be worse - I've seen reference to "the 'gar" before.....

It's Fat Bill anyhow.

Must agree, gorms, Norries, the Shee, Meggy etc leave me cold.

You lot need to get out more. Next thing you'll be complaining when someone "hops on the send train" or "bears down and crushes".

Yes, there is worse. "Bob", for example.

Oh I see...... Yes, "Norries" is appalling.

In reply to StuDoig:

Again, horrible.

I also hate "Skye Ridge". Like "The Ben", which one FFS.

Yes, "Cairngorm Mountain" makes me cringe. Equally so "Glencoe Mountain". As for "Nevis Range"......

I know Paul....I meant as in 'The Peak'

N'er mind!

Miserable bastards.

Cabin fever is biting. If these guys could just get out, we could call Derry Cairngorm whatever we liked

Hmm. Some Gaelic names are wonderful. Some aren't so wonderful. All those Meall Deargs. A bit unimaginative perhaps?

Not to mention Loch Loch, and Loch Coire nan Lochain. Did they run out of ideas?

Actually Tim, 'Derry Cairngorm' is wrong even when anglicised. Correctly it's merely Cairn Gorm, or An Càrn Gorm to be precise. It was only given its 'Derry' prefix to differentiate it from its better known counterpart above Glen More.

So let's have some precision please.

Should everyone say they're going to "the Northern Corries of the Cairngorms"?

Hi Billy, I put my update on here:

Loads of snow everywhere, too much really, and another windy weekend ahead!

Come on, these gripes are futile and ridiculous. It’s verging climbing snobbery – and as to what end I am at a complete loss.

What about “The Dubh Loch”, is that a problem too?

Really, who cares?

I really don't care what you all call it, but if you really want to nit pick, the range is called the Monadh Ruadh, not the Cairngorms.
I usually call it the Gorms though!

Have I missed it or did nobody actually answer the original question?

I'm not sure,
but as the road upto the Ski car park is closed according to the website
you need to be very keen to walk-in from the main road

No problem (obviously assuming you are referring to the loch and not the crag above it).

 Nic DW 03 Feb 2014
In reply to Little Billy: (On topic!)

As of Saturday: Lots of powder and even more windslab. Pretty nasty conditions. If one did manage to get to the crags (and I wouldn't recommend trying) I imagine there covered in powder and gulleys would be a death-trap.

Road up to ski center opened today, warm wet and windy overnight, near +3 at 650m but cooled down a lot as the day went on, going to have a go at Lurchers Crag tomorrow, anyone else?

fiacail area in northern Corrie's was good and well scoured yesterday.the slab was patchy but spooky. I've never seen a drift so big on the track between the car park and the mid station.

Friday and Monday look okay. Avoid gullies, avoid snow-holing - with so much snow moving around both will be dangerous.

I am talking about unnecessary, sloppy, irritating, cringeworthy and in many cases ambiguous or downright inaccurate abbreviations of the names of places with perfectly good and not unwieldy full names.

"Swizzy", by the way, is another one which makes my blood boil.
