I have just bought a packet of custard creams. I paid 65p for 300g. The packet states 495kC per 100g.

That's 23 kCals per penny or 1000 kCals for 44p.

I just want these for dunking rather than survival, but it got me thinking about the cost of calories.

A 250g block of butter for £1, gives

18.4 kCals per penny or 54p for 1000 kCals.

Unsurprising, I guess as carbs are cheap. How cheap can we go?

Sack of spuds? £5 for 56lb bag
In reply to woolsack:

I can't buy spuds that cheap, I think I pay ~£6 for a half sack.

At your £5 for a full sack (25kg):

Spuds 770 kCals per Kg.

38.5 kCals per penny or 26p for 1000 kCals.

are we taking cheap and readily available or just the cheapest possible
spuds for example cannot be eaten safely raw so will involve additional energy expenditure to access the calories within
Compared to a pack of bourbon/custard creams, or a jar of peanut butter which is good to go.

A quick search on rice calories and Tesco value rice gives 20p for 1000 cals. A nice curry sauce might bump up the price a bit

Tesco cooking oil £1.50 for 1l, 9000kcal.

In reply to Rick Graham:

Good call on rice. £1 a Kg for Apna Basmati rice at Tesco.

350 kC for 100g.

3500 kC for a £1.

29p for 1000 kC.

A higher figure than value rice, but I do quite like Basmati.
In reply to hokkyokusei:

17p for 1000 kC, cheap.

Not something to make a meal from like custard creams.

Unleaded Petrol, £1.30ish for 1l, also around 9000kcal.

Not especially edible though.

1kg bag of sugar - 4000 kCals - 94p (Tesco) = 23.5p per 1000kCal

is there a technique for this? do you just put a whole choccy digestive in or do you break it up first and mix it with the PB?

Like!

You'd need to use brown bread though, or it wouldn't be healthy. ()

Oats must be in there.

not a bread sandwich, surely - just two choccy biccies glued together with peanut butter! also works with an additional smear of jam...

A bit off-topic, but last time I was in Morrisons they were doing a 400g packet for 35p. Basic range rather than deluxe, but with custard creams I've never noticed a difference.

In reply to lowersharpnose:

How about 57.7kCals per penny, or 1000 kCals for 17.3p???

(Tescos value lard at 39p for 250g)

In reply to yeti:

Actually, as long as you peel them and don't eat any with any green in, they don't seem that harmful:

Yes, good, but don't eat them all the time. Look at Napoleon and his wallpaper, eh!
