name of cable to join old speaker to laptop

This must exist but since I don't know what its called I cant google it. I am after something that plugs into the headphone socket of the laptop, to join it to two old speakers white have red n white stereo leads.
Slightly random scrolling through the maplin site isn't helping....UKC knowledge might <crosses fingers>

Unless the speakers are amplified you may find the output rather quiet

I bought one of these from Richer Sounds yesterday, I know exactly what you mean. It's a "phono to 3.5mm lead" and the one I have is a Cambridge Audio one, the 100 series but there are plenty of other options:
