I had a very strange night the other night. I was in the Peak over night staying up at the fox house inn and looking out the window saw the stars were out. Having just bought a new camera I thought I would pop outside to take a few pics of the night sky.
Fired off a few long exposure shots (about 10 secs) and kept getting these weird red and green bands across the screen, I couldn't understand it as you couldn't see anything with the naked eye. Anyway after 20 mins or so I started to get pissed off thinking something was up with my camera.
It was only the next day when I saw a load of news coverage about how the lights had been very active and visible in lots of places over the UK that the penny dropped. An to think I was about to format the card.
Anyway unfortunately the UKC compression loses a lot of the nice star detail and clarity of the lights but here they are....
Lucky you. I've seen them in Canada and in Actic Finland where they were generally much higher in the sky and more wavy patterns, but I've also seen the green bands just above the horizon like your sighting.
