Is next week going to be "The Week" for this winter...?

Lots of snow in the hills....
Summit level thaw coming through....
Followed by valley level freeze....
Repeated a few times over the next few days....
And the titillating quasi-forecast of a period of fine stable weather next week....

Just saying...you know...we're all owed it....

Which forecast has a freeze?

looks like it could be getting a bit too warm. Hard to tell at this stage if it would be an issue for the highest venues or not.

MWIS, mountain-forecast.com and XC all suggesting Friday and Sunday being colder in between Thurs and Sat being warmer...if nothing else it'll shift some of the snow, drop a few horrific cornices and maybe settle the unsettled snowpack. And if we're lucky maybe allow for more icing/open up some routes ad areas that've been too plastered or avalanche threatened/allow for some actual gear to be found....!

MWIS is placing their bets with next week being "extensively fine weather with light winds, although the Scottish Highlands, particularly north may still be intermittently windy" and XC certainly showing dry with pressure building from Sunday through til Thursday (albeit quite mild during day, but overnight drops in temp hopefully means overnight freezes, so maybe early starts).

All just their professional guesswork until it happens though!!!!

Cheers,
Gordon

How good has wetterzentrale been this year? I'll be honest, I rarely use it as I find it so bloody difficult to navigate (and that's with Google Translate on!).

Or maybe I find it difficult to navigate because I rarely use it.....!

Seems pretty inline with ecmwf just now to me which is pretty accurate.

Looking at this I'd say past monday the reliability is very questionable, but expecting more than 5 days of accuracy out of any of the forecasts is pretty optimistic IMO.

Any more speculation on the weather for next week from anyone? Trying to figure out if it's worth hanging around or making my way South for some sunny rock climbing. Weather through the weekend looks pish! There's a few forecasts suggesting the freezing levels are going to lift dramatically from Tuesday : (

Ah but if there are night frosts and the air is still then the snow will stay frozen in the shade even up to an air temperature of around +5. These are the best conditions ever for winter climbing, as long as you stay in the shade that is

It really depends exactly where the high sits. I doubt they know yet. Personally I still have an open mind but if I didn't live here, I'd go and maybe come back.
