Ski dilemma - mountaineering planks

I am looking to get a new setup for ski mountaineering / mild extreme routes (TD - 50 deg).

I currently use Movement Sluffs which are great for charging but a bit on the stiff and heavy side.

Currently looking at something like a BD Aspect with a slightly shorter length than I'd normally ski (-5cm).

Any recommendations or tips for what I should look out for? Have tried Waybacks which I hated and BD Reverts which are too soft.

On paper not exactly what you want but I run a 99 DPS Wailer with tech bindings and think it is the dogs bananas.

It's not heavy and skis like a much fatter ski but has pretty decent manoeuvrability, I've skied fast open deep powder in it and steep narrow couloirs and loved in in both. It will also perform better in crust/crud and mixed conditions than other skis.

Not sure how the weight actually compares, sorry, but practically I've had no problems and find going up a joy.

Worth a look? I've just got a pair but haven't skied them so can't comment. Stiffer than Waybacks, very light, supposedly good grip and a fantastic deal.

Another vote for DPS Wailers. Having skied the 99 hybrid and 112 Pure, for touring and harder snow, the 99s are the way to go.

Throw a tech binding on it (I've got Beasts on my 112 Pures) and you're away.

I would give a vote to black crows, I have been using orb freebirds and this winter for touring and have been awesome, but to get a comparable ski to what you have been on waist width I would hold off and get the new navis freebird coming out in the autumn.

No DPS pure 99's available until this Autumn now but you can pre order & get them cheaper than the advertised price.

Escape Route in Whistler had a few last week at pretty good prices!

Rocky Mountian Underground might also be worth a look but might be a bit heavy - skied a pair of the The Whole Enchiladas last week for a couple of lines - great fun.

Hi, I have spent the last 2 seasons on G3 ZEN with Plum Guides, and love them for their weight, cut and stiff and responsive way of skiing. They are now available in a carbon version which is expensive but I suspect will be brilliant. I bet you could get last years non carbon version on a deal. Here is the link: http://www.genuineguidegear.com/gear/skis Good Luck.

Ahh. I saw those too Dave. And am still very tempted, but am torn slightly between these and the Black Crows Orb Freebirds.
