Hi all!
I am looking into a weekend away for a scout group and was hoping to use some type of accommodation close to hill walks and climbs/scrambles (none in particular but certainly those activities). I'm not looking for accommodation as basic as a bothy, we would need access to water, cooking facilities and toilets.
I'm a member of the BMC and have hears that members are entitled to used mountain accommodation but am at a loose end with regards to what is available to me and if I can use it with other non-BMC members.

I have also been directed to the Climber's Club range of accommodation which looks perfect but I am not sure that I can use any of it without becoming a member of the Climbing Club as well.

I was wondering if anyone had an answer to my query or could recommend any alternative sources of accommodation?

Many thanks

Where? If you could specify an area people may have some advice?

The hut GLUF recommends is great for a scout group. It is remote - well a 1km walk up a bridlepath - but cosy and well equipped with about 30 beds. And a lovely view of The Old Man of Coniston from the dormitory window. And they let it out to groups.

Suggest you go on the CC website: http://www.climbers-club.co.uk/cms/huts/hut-restrictions-access-fees/

You'll see that there are various restrictions on hut bookings by outside parties, but depending on location, date, size of party, you should be able to sort something out. The hut booking secretary is your best contact.

Good luck!

Hi, you can download the huts list from the BMC website http://www.thebmc.co.uk/Download.aspx?id=12 or you can search for huts in a specific area using our map search https://www.thebmc.co.uk/map

Restrictions vary (i.e. some will only allow members, some won't let u18s stay) so best to have a read through the list and contact the huts secretary with your specific query.

Hope that helps!

That looks great! Have you used it personally?

I looked at all this but I guess I didn't read it properly, I assumed I had to be a member of CC to use them. Is that not correct?

No, you can book all the huts at a slightly higher fee than members, the best for your requirements might be Cwm Glas Mawr, I think you can book the whole hut for your party, or at least you used to be able to. See this link for Cwm Glas Mawr details.

I didn't really have a location in mind (useful I know) but was more wondering if anyone could recommend anything?

Snowdonia, close to Tryfan and Langdale or Conniston would be good places to start I suppose

A lot of club huts have problems with the fact that bedrooms are communal and they want their huts to always be available to their members and so you have to consider children sleeping in the same rooms as adult strangers under the child protection stuff.

"SUPERVISED GROUPS AT CLUB HUTS WITH UNDER 18s AMONGST THE GROUP

Q. I believe that when a school or youth group is allowed access to a club hut, it is wise not to allow members of the club who have nothing to do with the group to use the hut?

R. There are two possibilities here:

When a hut is hired out to a group such as a school or a youth group containing under 18s, the club has a duty of care, and should inform members not to use the hut while the group are using it. It is also reasonable to say to those organising the group that they need to give adequate notice so that club members can be informed in good time.

The second possibility is when a group of parents (including individual adults in loco parentis) with children want to use or hire a hut. In this case the advice given in the previous section applies. As each child will be accompanied by a parent or an adult in loco parentis then the adult accompanying each child will be able to make decisions about the sleeping arrangements for the child or children they are responsible for. See previous section for more on this. This does mean then that a club may reasonably decide that club members may use the hut at the same time as such a group. If this is the decision of the club then it is advised that the group taking the children be informed that members of the club will still have access to the hut. Additionally, it would be reasonable for the club to inform its members that a group containing children will be using the hut and specify the dates."

Yes and it is excellent. Ample space with a well equipped kitchen and a large drying room.
Also contrary to the advice on the website, youth groups with CRB issues can have exclusive use monday to thurs inclusive

In Capel Curig (not far from the Tyn-y-Coed pub) is North London Mountaineering club's hut

Plas y Brenin in Capel Curig has two self catering bunkhouses. I haven't stayed there but they look good on the web-site.
