time to retire my black diamond blizzard harness

wanting one with an EQUAL AMOUNT OF DO EVERYTHINGNESS but, as i hang in a harness all day at work, with the most comfort without being bulky or restrictive, adjustable leg loops preferred

I find the Arctryx really uncomftable unless you have a lot of padding on. No good for sport but spot on for alpine. I find the Sama to be pretty all round if you can live with the rear gear loop and this one looks good:

"It isn’t super-lightweight, nor does it pack down to a tiny package like some modern harness designs, but the trade off for this is that it is super-comfy to wear and particularly to hang in; indeed on semi-hanging stances or whilst abseiling I think it is the most comfy harness I’ve ever used." http://www.ukclimbing.com/gear/review.php?id=5779

Having used both sport harnesses and rope access harnesses, I find too much padding does not always equal more comfort. (it will grind against your family jewels.) But it also depends on how you hang in your harness. Just a vertical load or also some sideway motion?

It is indeed very comfy that harness, tried one on in a shop once.

Have you thought about getting your weight off the harness and onto a bosun's chair? Petzl Podium if you have the dosh (expensive, but excellent), homebrew plywood/foam/cordage affair if you dont.

Work work? Y'know you should be using worky type gear really right? WaHR, PUWER, risk assessments, method statements, rescue plan, yadda yadda, blah blah.. <HUGE yawn!>

That's a good review because there always seems to be some reluctance to say something Arcteryx sucks in some way - probably because we've just spent so much buying something from Arcteryx! But I reviewed M270 harness and many of the things he is saying about the 360 ring true for that. The M270 doesn't even have keeper loops for the spare belt. I end up stuffing it down the waist belt which seems stupid and spoils the comfort - they're expensive harnesses so surely there should be some solution to this!? Also the ice screw clipper slot thing is also true - the M270 has loads of slots but most are under the gear loops so really aren't particularly useful. But good marks for comfort and weight like he says.

Absolutely, if you are paying over £100 for a harness it should be up to the job.

Likewise, I've got an Arcteryx 320a for everything and, while generally it's great, there are a few niggles that are annoying for a harness that costs so much, one of which is that there's nowhere that can hold the extra length of the straps once they've been pulled tight - and I'm middle in the size range rather than small - as well as they seem to run over the first gear loop.

Hi Keiran,
I'm currently looking at / trying on harnesses as well. I found that the orion has considerably less leg adjustment than most of the others I tried (I'm a 33" waist and 24" leg circ.) and I couldn't get it to fit. The large didn't seem much better in the leg loop size than the med. Can't comment on the arycterx harnesses, but decided against them after reading a lot of reviews about niggly problems with them. I'm not forking out £100+ for a harness with what sounds like some pretty basic design faults / annoyances.

I've settled on a DMM Renegade 2 which had much better adjustment than the orion and was more comfortable to hang in. A shame as I was quite sold on the orion......

It'll be used for everything from short sport to alpine mixed but seems to have the features I'd wand for all of them.

Theres a massive difference in harnesses with apparently the same sizing and spec though - definitely try and find one to try on before buying!

Cheers,

Stuart

I'll second that you'd better try some harnesses on in the shop and then you will decide easier. I found Petzl Corax to be very comfortable and would recommend for everyone who isn't concerned about weight.

cheers guys. really great to hear your personal experiences and all the flaws. awesome reviews. awesome links. hopefuly get some tried on before the bank holidays.

btw its not for work but when I'm there, and the drop allows for it, an old skateboard deck with a couple of layers of foam underlay's a nice touch.

nice one guys.k
