Heading into the beautiful hills for a walk with my dog around the Glyders. I would like to do a route taking in Elidar Fawr, Y Garn, Glyder Fach and possibly Tryfan. I want to do a Circular route without having to walk back along the road! open to suggestions

Start at the Ogwen cottage walk to Llyn Idwal and take the path up the side of Foel goch (From memory, might be Y Garn) but you can walk up that and follow the valley edge along and do your summits. Tryfan might be a bit far for the winter light but you can pop up the south ridge and back down the same way into the valley to Llyn Bochlwyd to Llyn Idwal and back to the cottage.

That selection of peaks sounds quite tricky to make in to a circular walk without roads. I would split it in to two days. One could be from Ogwen, north ridge of Tryfan, Bristly Ridge, and descending y Gribin or Devil's Kitchen. The second could be from Nant Peris http://www.walk-snowdonia.co.uk/relidir.php

Can you scramble like that with a dog too?

Depends on the dog...

Elidir is hard to fit in..

The classic loop is Ogwen > North Ridge Y garn >Glyders> Tryfan > south ridge > back via cwm tryfan or bochlwyd.

However you can head down the old A5 and swing up into the glyders after Foel Goch, but its steep.. and not a path then out and back to Elidir. And thats a long day.

The obvious way is just use the bus and go Nant > Elidir > Tryfan and back down the miners then cut across to pen y pass and use the bus back down the pass.

Perhaps i have over estimated the undertaking. Is there a better circular route with the national park?

I don't have a dog myself, however I imagine the Elidir Fawr loop would probably be fine with a dog. For the Tryfan loop, I have seen some dogs happy on the North Ridge, but I guess it would depend on the dog. Going up via Llyn Bochlwydd would avoid the North Ridge, and would lead to the Miners track on to y Glyderau which could be used instead of Bristly ridge itself, and I imagine the Devils Kitchen descent should be ok in descent.

Here's a couple of suggestions:

Carnedds - start up the reservoir road to the col between Pen yr Helgi Du and Craig yr Ysfa. Follow the ridge up to Carnedd Llewelyn and then along the main ridge to Pen yr Ole Wen. Descend the SE ridge back to Ogwen. You can avoid the main road by using the old A5 and various paths on the Glyders side of the road.

Arans - park in Cwm Cowarch. You can then do a circular route over Aran Fawddwy and back to the car park. See http://www.ian-barton.com/posts/2013/Jun/03/an-arans-traverse-and-summit-ca... for more details.

The route IainRUK has suggested sounds like a good choice - Y Garn -> Glyderau -> Miners Track -> Llyn Bochlwydd. You could add in Foel Goch (next to Y Garn) or the South Ridge or Tryfan if you wanted too.

It's worth being aware there is still likely to be some snow on the ground this weekend http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/public/weather/mountain-forecasts/snowdonia#?ta...

There is a little known path through the eastern cwms of the northern Glyderau. If you leave Ogwen Cottage along the old road, pass Yr Hafod and then reach the stream from Cwm Cywion. Follow the stream up past waterfalls until a wall crosses the stream. Here you can pick up a path going right, that traverses below the Mushroom Garden into Cwm Coch, then round the tip of Yr Esgair into Cwm Bual. You then ascend (pathless) along the spur between Cwm Bual and Cwm Perfedd (faint path appears which suddenly turns into a proper path near the top) to reach the main Glyderau ridge between Foel Goch and Elidir Fawr/Mynydd Perfedd. The traverse path is faint in places, and occasionally loose and hands might be needed to negotiate a rocky section, but it passes some interesting ground:

For the return just follow the ridge over Y Garn, then on over Glyder Fawr and Fach, down the screes next to Bristly Ridge, up and down Tryfan's south ridge, then walk out down via Cwm Bochlwyd back to Ogwen Cottage.

Yeah thats sounds like a great route, Whats the parking like around the cottage? It is a pay and display job?
 Mike Peacock 28 Mar 2014
In reply to goldmember:

Pay and display at Ogwen, though there are plenty of free laybys along the road towards Tryfan.

Had a great day out with the mutt! Turns out she doesn't like scree that much

In reply to goldmember:

yeah dogs struggle on scree often. Fly would follow me over anything but tryfan especially wasn't fun for her so tended to avoid it.

In reply to IainRUK: Where abouts does fly enjoy the most on your days out? Want to avoid most scree and boulder fields.
