Help! The dog knocked our laptop off the table onto the floor, and now it won't load windows. I've had one error message saying "no operating system found" and another telling me there's a problem with the hard drive.

Anyone got any suggestions?

Thanks in advance!

It may be the file allocation table being corrupt, a utility may be able to restore.

Yep, as above, give the hard drive a bit of a shuggle and there's a good chance it will wake up. Modern drives park the heads if they detect a fall so the software /should/ be safe...

If it doesn't wake up happy, then the disk may have been damaged after all. Try a boot disk and possibly kick yourself for not backing everything up.

If the drive is dead, it's pretty trivial and not that costly to replace it.

so long as its not under warranty etc, unscrew the compartment that holds the hard drive, take it out and reinsert. try rebooting, if it still doesnt, its probably kaput, there are ways of recovering data usually even if it wont load an operating system.

Thanks for the replies. I'm trying a few of the things suggested.
