Hi - can anyone tell me whether snow is affecting any of the Helvellyn descent routes. I want to know which are OK for walkers without crampons / axe / rope.

I understand there is snow on the Swirral Edge descent which rules it out for normal walkers - how about Keppel Cove or south off Dollywagon ?

Thanks

In reply to indigo:

Any snow is likely to be soft given the temperature at the moment.

I did the ridges snow and ice last year without ice gear and I came out with brown trousers... I think the prospect of doing Catstye Cam overrode my sensibilities. Most foolish thing I've ever done on a hill.

A few years back we went up Wythburn and down Dollywaggon Pike - Dunmail Raise in patchy snow - wasn't a problem as long as we were careful and didn't descend straight down to Grisedale Tarn from DP, looping west into Raise Beck instead.
