Thinking of heading up Ledge Route at some point in next few days, just wondering if anyone knows if 4 and 5 are looking ok in terms of cornice, especially for initial entry at top for descent. Any info appreciated.

Cheers,
Gordon

Hi Gordon,

Number Four and Number Five Gully are now looking OK. I've been up on Ben Nevis a few days recently and these two gullies are fine to go up or down.

Ledge Route has some snow on the initial ledges but the ridge is quite rocky for much of it.

There is a massive bergschrund at the top of number 4, bellow the still sizeable cornice. It looked to be around 15m deep!

As of tuesday the crack at the top of number 4 was narrow and passable but so so deep!

Not really a bergshrund, considering it is not at the separation point between the valley glacier and the smaller hanging glacier on the mountainside.

Hence the correct term would be glide crack.

FIY ja silleen.
