So when do they emerge from their dens to prey on the innocent? Will we regret visiting at the end of May? Do we need another plan?

Good chance of midge hell by end May, I'm afraid. Stock up on Autan or Smidge and make their application an early routine each day and you'll be fine.

Have spent many Whitsun afternoons climbing in Glen Nevis; rain hammering down while the sun simultaniously cooks you in your rain jacket, wind roaring through the birch tops but leaving tropical calm under the canopy and the midges nipping furiously at your eyeballs.
