Sarek - Traverse of the southern massives

I have a rather specific question, so a long shot, but here goes.

We are planning another family trip to the Sarek this summer. I know the northern part quite well, but have never been to the southern end.

I am therefore thinking about traversing the southern bit east to west before hiking out to the North.

Has anyone on here by any chance tried to cross from Lullihavagge to Luohtalahkko through the short valley northeast of Luohtajavrre (Parte massive), or from Jiegnavagge to Njoatsosvagge just north of Bulkas (Ähpar massive)? From looking at the map and whatever photos I can find on the net this looks like a logical connection between the established routes described in the Grundsten guide.

The Grundsten guide recommends the latter as an technically easy but strenuous access from Njoatsosjavrre to Bulkas north ridge. However, it also declares it to be "not suitable as a pass" (at least in the west to east direction) which doesn´t make much sense to me.

Any advice appreciated,

Thanks,

CB

I've only done a bit of skiing in the northern side of Sarek so can't help, but there is a good circle of keen Scandinavian backpackers linked via blogs and twitter who might be able to help out. Try Hendrik https://twitter.com/hendrikmorkel writer of http://hikinginfinland.com/ - I don't think he has trekked in Sarek but he will probably know some Swedes who might be able to give you some more specific info.

Good luck! It's a beautiful part of the world.

Thanks, I will check out your links!

Sarek is indeed one of the most beautiful and wild places in Europe, which is why we go back every couple years. So far we have always started in Ritsem, so we would like to try something else this time round.

I have already asked the same question on some of the German trekking forums, but found the level of knowledge there rather poor. Last time I asked the thread got bogged down in a discusssion whether 40 kg packs are too much for a summer trip....

I would also love to go skiing in Sarek at some point, but find it hard to convince the wife (or find other partners, I would even have permission to go without her!).

Thanks again,

CB

With Hendrik and the UL types you are more likely to get into a debate as to whether 4 kg packs are too much for a summer trip! BTW, I tweeted him a link to this thread so hopefully he will see it and have some suggestions of who to ask.

Another person who might be able to point you in the right direction is Tomas who writes http://www.scandinavian-hiking.com/ I've climbed with Tomas a few times - a super nice Irish chap living in Sweden. Again I don't know if he has been to Sarek but he might know people who have.

You can try to contact this guy. From the map on the page, he seems to have been there: http://explore-photo.com/deux-semaines-seul-dans-le-sarek-presentation/

Thanks, but according to the map he was north of where I want to go, in the part where I have been before. Might try contacting him anyway.
