Hi everyone

Last November I overweighted a dropknee on a trad route resulting in bruising the bone and damaging the meniscus. It took 6 weeks to get back climbing (very low grade) routes. I have been referred to a physiotherapist since my MRI scan a month ago. I am now nearly back to my previous fitness. However my knee makes clicking noises when straitened and i experience a dull ache a lot of the time.
Just wondered what peoples experiences have been with healing damaged meniscus? Do they sort themselves out eventually. Slightly worried as i'm not sure how physio is going to fix the clicking noises my knee makes. I can't run on it either.
Keen to hear of other peoples experiences with this sort of injury.

Cheers
Edd

Hi Ed. I had something similar happen back in early December. I initially ignored it but it didn't seem to be getting any better. My knee kept swelling up/hurting a lot when used and i was walking with a limp.

I had an op about 9 weeks ago to repair a double meniscal tear and it is a lot better now than it was before. I've gone from having a swollen knee that had sharp pains on the inside and outside (and limited range of motion) to being fully able to boulder in roofs again and use heel hooks, toe hooks and fall off on to pads

Did they say that the MRI had shown anything? I don't think they heal themselves unless very minor and although you can probably do a lot of things without aggravating it, I figured it was best to go for an op and remove the tears so there was nothing to catch inside/fold/tear more.

The rehab went well doing some physio exercises as well as lots of stretching/cycling and then easy climbing up and down without jumping off for a few weeks.

Hope you can get it resolved.

So many injuries this time of year! Clicking isn't a major issue, pain, swelling and dysfunction is. If it's not swelling up and you have full bend and full straighten you probably don't want to be having surgery unnecessarily. The dull ache could well be from the bone bruising. If you haven't done a full rehab program then that might be worthwhile, if your still unhappy after doing a complete rehab go and see a knee specialist but unless there is something hideous on your scan they will probably tell you to go away for at least another 6 months unless you are having major problems.

Thanks for the replies. I'm climbing and cycling again and back to full fitness. I'm guessing getting back to fitness is why the bone is still bruised and aching. Hopefully the physio will sort it.

Cheers
