Ride to Paris, Avenue Verte or other routes ?

I am thinking of taking a last minute, light weight, bike trip at half term, probably to Paris.

My brother lives near Portsmouth so that would be the obvious ferry but it goes to Le Harve rather than Dieppe, which the Avenue Verte starts from. We could hook into it about half way along.

Has anyone done either route ? any advice or recommendations ? is it worth getting a guide book or just a map and google for side notes ?

Did the Avenue Vert a while back and the section between Dieppe and Forges was excellent the rest not so much. There are ment to be AV signs but can be a bit hit and miss. Long sections with no access to a shop for water/food etc. Dieppe ferry timings aren't good either.

I'm looking to head further south than Paris but not via AV.
