More good racing today, but no mention of this incident in the neutralised zone in the tv highlights:

God only knows what the guy in the commissars' car was thinking there, could have easily killed someone.

Looked like a rider needed doctors attention on the far side of the road. The bit that gets me is he carried on which looks like he may have squeezed or hit the riders trying to avoid him

The TdF riders must be looking forward to the first few stages.

Still not as bad as the fcukwit in Ambleside who drove straight into the peloton of the Milk Race, despite police and marshals trying to stop him!

Really, when was that?

In reply to balmybaldwin:

Hard to work out what was going on. What was the car doing in the middle of the riders in the first place ? If it's in the neutralised zone, maybe the car should have been ahead of the riders and they started to go past. And what caused the rider to crash into the cameraman - they weren't struck by the car, but I guess must have heard the crash and looked round

In reply to balmybaldwin:

It was a while ago, but still sends shivers when I think about it.
V late 1980's or early 1990's I forget which.

Bloke got bored of waiting for the race to pass, drove out of the main car park by the Bridge House and headed for Grasmere, nearly knocked over a couple of marshals Police Escort Group rider and hit a couple of riders head on! The peloton neutralised the stage up The Struggle in protest. I think they started racing again later in the stage.

IIRC the local driver didn't get more than a slapped wrist, claiming that (despite the large crowds, signage, police and marshals presence, advanced notices up for weeks, several PEG riders with blues & 2's, dozens of people attempting to flag him down and sundry bunting and banners) it was unclear the road was closed for a cycle race!

In reply to Chris the Tall:
The car was at the front of the riders, in the normal position for a neutralised section at the start of the day's racing.

The rider that hit the camera man was swerving to avoid all the other riders that were swerving to miss the car that had crashed 3 feet in front of them.

Edit:

There are 2 riders that have got in front of the Commissar's car. They shouldn't be there in a neutralised section, they should be behind it.

That is the Trott sisters I think who were allowed/given the honour to lead the race during the neutral period through their home town.

There was an odd period in the middle of the race today when they neutralized it for a mile or 2 just after a group got clear... commentry thought it was the police advising of a road incident ahead they needed to clear

That's fair enough then.
In reply to balmybaldwin:
Yeah it was halted for a motorbike crash not connected to the race.

In reply to balmybaldwin:

i watched a bit yesterday and was watching expecting an incident at a few points when passing road obstacles.

also in the giro some tw*t crossed the road in his electric wheelchair right in front of the chasing group.
some of the other incidents mentioned come down to the public in the uk and their attitude to cyclists.
lets hope yorkshire doesnt embarrass us in front of the world
In reply to mark s:

There was a guy on a mobility scooter that crossed the road between the race leaders and peleton on the women's tour. Is that the incident you mean or was there something similar on the giro?
