Anyone done the Welsh sportive around Pembrokeshire? Is it a good one for a first sportive? Otherwise can anyone recommend a good one? Also, what's considered a reasonable price for registration on such an event?
Loads of questions I know but I'd be grateful for any pointers.
Thanks,

Gethin.

Not sure if something described as "epic and lung-busting" is really what I'd like to start with.

Is it?

Im not actually living in the UK so am just entering as a friend is doing it.
You've gotta admit that sounds enticing though…doesn't it??

it's also 18 miles longer than the medium route I was thinking about doing in the other one.

Good luck!

Aim high do good events, I have done the Etape Eryri the last couple of years (not doing it this year off to yorkshire for a spot of cycling)
Ffestiniog 360 is local charity run effectivly £12 for a sociable training run but lovely route.

I'm doing the Etape Eryri this year!! My first sportive. Can't wait.

A quick question, Jethro, if I may - what are the food stops like on it? Is it just energy drink and sweet stuff, or is there savoury fayre (e.g. bacon butties)?

In reply to Alun:

No Bacon butties, energy drinks, sandwiches, cakes, bananas and sweets, it does vary. I would use it as a top up rather than rely on it to get you round, plenty of burger, pizzas and bacon butties at the finish line

Do you mean the Tour of Pembrokeshire which takes place in April?

http://www.tourofpembrokeshire.co.uk/

I've done it for the last two years; though had a bit of a disaster this year and didn't finish.

3 distances 108, 75 & 50 miles. I did the long distance, it's a fairly tough route and this year the conditions were pretty grim.

The organisation and atmosphere are really good though; this year they even had a Mavic support car and motorbike fixing punctures if you were lucky enough for them to pass when you'd stopped.

The entry opens in August and if you entered before the end of the month the fee was only £15; enter before the end of December and it was around £20.

No, This one is just called "The Wales Sportive" http://www.thewalessportive.com/ starting and finishing in Tenby on the 12th on July. There are options of 42, 70 and 112 miles and I'm considering the 70 mile option.

Ah I see

If you enjoy it, I'd recommend the Tour of Pembrokeshire for next year, plenty of time to prepare for the 108 mile route!
