Favourite Hawkwind Track

Just caught a bit of Hawkind on my ipod via the "shuffle songs" feature.

They do a nifty tune or two.

For me;

1. The demented man

2. Freefall.

3. Spirit of the age.

Yours?

Levitation, followed by Quark, Strangeness and Charm and maybe a bit of Silver Machine for nostalgic value.

Don't know a lot about hawkwind, but I will be watching this thread as I need a soundtrack if I'm going to do the climb of the same name

Down Through the Night (live). Especially good when driving at night through falling snow.

High Rise (live)... Incredible... followed by Silver Machine.
In reply to stroppygob: Heavens, there's a question. Quark, strangeness and charm gets played a lot, as does Damnation Alley. Motorway City too, and a number of others. But the favourite?

Probably Master of the Universe. In Search of Space is probably my favourite Hawkwind album.

Levitation? Brainstorm?

or god forbid the Elric Chronicle of the Black Sword album?

Part of the problem is there are so many re-recordings/ live versions/ ostensibly different but essentially the same track versions that any given Hawkwind song has about half a dozen different versions.

So long as you stop looking after about 1985, you'll probably be safe

What about Phetamine Street off Distant Horizons? That's much more recent and rocks along quite nicely.
In reply to stroppygob:

My first choice; "The Demented man"

youtube.com/watch?v=OEyh2RMOcBU&

is pretty atpyical Hawkwind, but still my fave. They never did anything quite like this before or after. (Or did they?)

Can you remember how many times you've seen Hawkwind?
 toad 13 May 2014
In reply to dbapaul:

Have to admit I hadn't heard the album, and yes it bops along, but the more recent stuff that I've heard live has all been much of a muchness, but then live Hawkind are pretty much a tribute act these days, with mr Brock lurking at the back. Still he must be the wrong side of 70 and hasn't exactly lived a cloistered life.

Coincidentally, just as I typed this I heard the words "more, and better drugs" on the radio. Spooky

I can, I write the date on the sleeve of my lab coat every time. There are over twenty dates on there.

Christ, where to start......

Assault and Battery/Golden Void?
Shot down In the Night (Live 79)?
Hassan I Sabbah, I had originally written this off as a daft druggie song until I found out what it was really about. Absolutely fabulous intro.

First gig; Hawkwind, Glasgow Apollo, Oct 21 1980. Took a while to top that one...

Too much,

But Bob Calvert's stuff- Ejection, The Right Stuff, Urban Guerilla, Aerospaceage inferno, Robot- all stand the test of time.

And most of these:

Seen the 'wind' many times, Space Ritual is just one long track (with the right stimulant) I would go with Lord of Light just for the bass riff...man!

I had the singles of Urban Guerilla and Ejection. I suspect Urban Guerilla especially must be something of a collector's item now because it was banned soon after relaease at the height of the IRA bombing campaign.

I wonder where I put them...

Anybody remember Michael Moorcroft's album with Rolling in the Ruins on it? I may have to log onto iTunes.

Great, time to tell my Hawkwind story (again)!

Me and my pal Jay decided to have our joint 21st birthday party down on Gyllyngvase beach in Falmouth where we students at the time, about 100 or so people turned up & it was a good night. About 3am as things started to thin out a bit, a yacht moored up offshore and the occupant rowed ashore with his guitar to join our party - and it was Dave Brock!

He played a few songs, drank, chatted and jammed with the rest of us until the sun came up; he was good fun.

Jay has now passed away unfortunately, but I always think of that night on the beach when I think of him and always quietly thank Dave Brock. Just a fleeting night to him no doubt, but it meant so much to us. Thanks Dave, unforgettable.

One of the funniest documentaries I've ever seen was Lemmy's graphic account of the bands meltdown tour of the States.

It's So Easy. Tragic that they dumped Lemmy just as he was getting going.

Then the run-in from 10 Seconds of Forever to Brainstorm.

And as mentioned above, the Roadhawks version of You Shouldn't Do That.

Always wish "The Aubergine That Ate Rangoon" was longer.

Paradox.

Loads of great songs from "Hawkwind" to "Quark".

Hhhmmm.... interesting, but very subjective.
In reply to stroppygob: Inspired by this thread, I've had a thoroughly enjoyable evening listening to some Hawkwind CDs and LPs. Marvellous stuff.

That's one version of Hawkwind playing live these days. Nick Turner is also still doing "Hawkwind" usually under the name of Space Ritual. Having seen both in recent years, Turners version are much, much closer to the real thing, actually worth seeing.

Plus i know Nick Turner, really nice geezer.
