Possibly going to Koh Yao in a few weeks. I don't want to be dragging a rope + rack 14 hours away....

Has anyone ever hired gear there? Or can comment more generally on the quality of rented gear in the country?

I am sue the guys at the Shop in Tha Khao village would rent out some gear for you. They have plenty of ropes and draws there for guiding.

If not, then hire stuff in Tonsai and take it over to Koh Yao with you.

Personally, I'd rather take my own stuff for climbing over there. Take plenty of draws to Koh Yao - some long pitches.

A full set of kit - rope, draws, harnesses and shoes will set you back £20/day, so bear that in mind if climbing for more than a day or two. The shoes will probably be shagged, and you obviously know nothing aboutthe history of the other gear. Just been on Tonsai for three weeks. I wouldn't hire gear there for all those reasons.
