Hello Has any one done this route and stayed in the mittellegi hut?
If so how easy is it to book etc also the same for the monk hut I am thinking of going in July

In reply to jsimo:

I did it nearly 20 years ago, walked in from the valley and bivvied on ridge crest, near the hut. Staying in hut is cheating IMHO!

Staying in the hut is absolutely normal. Congrats on your 'long walk in' stance but 'no-one' does it that way any more.

Re booking - last time I was there you just rocked up and paid through an honesty box if you hadn't pre-booked; though I'm sure they would like pre-booking.

I guess they can't claim a complete ascent then! There is harder climbing gaining the Eigerglescher than anything on the ridge!!!!!!

Or if its a three day adventure you're after (!) climb the ridge below the Mittellegi hut too (the Eiger Hornli) and use the fantastic (unmanned) Ostegg hut as well.

Yep an amazing hut in a spectacular setting and the old boy who runs it is a legend! If there is a settled spell of weather on the way, make sure you book a few days in advance as it gets full very quickly and the following link contains most of the info you require:

...and the following is a short film of our 2 day adventure last summer which shows getting to the hut, the hut itself and on the super-exposed ridge!

Last time I was at the 'Easteregg' Hut it was locked. You need to get the keys from the guides office in Grindelwald I believe.

It's not free, you need to book in with the guides office and they give you the keycode.

You have to book your place in the mittellegi hut, it can get busy, you call the hut directly when the season starts or call the guides office.
