Hi All,

Please can anyone reccommend a nice Via Ferrata's around this area? We're heading out on a climbing trip and after something for a 'rest' day.

I know there are plenty in the area - we're after something long and exposed, the higher the better. Views, setting and atmosphere the most important. Single day from the valley.

Anything that particularly stands out would be great!

Thanks in advance,

Dave

From Ailefroide head down the hill and at the bridge and tunnel at Les Claux there is a great 3 part VF that follows the river and is suitable exposed in places. if you have the energy for a second head a little further down the valley and at Les Vigneaux take the left on to the traverse road to Briancon, just on the other side of Les Vigneaux there is an obviouse parking on the left, behind that on the big rock face is a 200m vertical VF, ill find the link....

A little further down the valley road is the Gorges du Durance, its the only one that charges at €5 per head in season.

Les Vigneaux is my favourite!

I'd also recommend the Vigneaux VF.

If you want something a bit different then the Croix de Toulouse above Briancon gives a great birds' eye view of town and the forts.

The VF on the l'Yret at the top end of the Guisane valley is good fun, and gives you a summit.

That on the Aiguillette du Lauzet also gives you a summit, and is more of a 'complete' day (bit of a walk in, etc.)

Personally, I wouldn't bother with the one at Pelvoux - it's short, easy and unexciting... could be done in the evening whilst (I presume) camping at Ailefroide?

There's also one up towards the Col de Pousterle (other side of the valley from the les Vigneaux one) - like the Pelvoux one, if you're only doing one, it's not worth making it this one!

Have a good trip.

I'd definately recommend the gorges du Durance and the Mines du Grand Clot - long and at times quite exposed at times with a ladder to nowhere halfway up the face.

Was many years ago but I enjoyed the VF at Fressinière, a bit of a drive but you get to visit another valley

I thought the Ailefroide/Pelvoux VF was excellent.
The Gorges du Durance one is also excellent.
