Daily HGV insurance - any idea how

I'm converting a small bus into a motorhome, its not finished and therefore hasn't been reclassified with DVLA. As such I cant get MOT etc until its completed.

Problem is I'm moving from Dorset to Gwynedd in the next couple of weeks.

Been quoted £1100 to have it moved by low loader, but can hire a beavertail truck for £150 per day (yes I have a HGV licence) but they dont do the insurance - apparently most users just add the hire vehicle to their fleet insurance.

So any idea if/how I can insure a 12tonne beavertail truck for probably only 1 day - 2 max.

Speak to a broker - Probably best go to a commercial insurance broker - try Towergate or Evolution (commercial motor specialists)

Maybe speak to one of the new daily insurance companies that are springing up (insure&go i think are one of these)

Tried a couple of brokers they didn't know of anyone that does this.

The daily insurance companies all seem to do just cars and vans not hgv's.

Had a better quote of £960 so might have to go with this.....ouch!!

Have you tried Equity Redstar: http://www.equityredstar.co.uk/About/Pages/ContactUs.aspx

They do specialise in unusual vehicles (A colleague has her atriculated horse box insured with them) and I would expect if you talk to them directly, they may well be able to do something.

Another possiblity is to insure it for a year, and then cancel the policy once you've returned the truck (you'll take a hit on an admin charge, but get most of the premium back) - just be aware that doing this might flag any claims for fraud investigations (early cancellations is a classic money laundering & Fraud tell tale)

Give NFU Mutual a call. They are great with HGV horseboxes and very cheap. Don't know if they'll do what you need but you can but try
