Just wondering if I should just take my outer chainring off and leave it as a double or fit a bash ring on my raceface ride cx triple as I rarely use the outer (44T).

It all depends on the kind of riding you do. I went double and bash on my Zesty and have never missed the big ring but on that bike if I start to spin out I just freewheel for a bit.

As for the bash, I think it's great as it lets me bash into stuff with gay abandon.

What kind of bike is it and are you more XC or gravity orientated?

Strange things happening with the editing of that last message. I think it makes sense.

I haven't used a chainring bigger than 38T for several years and dozens of trips to Alpine and Pyrenean bike parks. In such places a bash ring comes in handy but it's not super necessary - I have one on my enduro bike at the moment but for several years I just rode two rings and washers on the chainring bolts!

its a hardtail kona kula mostly xc, moors, trail centres etc
i probably wont need a bash for most rides.
I hadnt thought of using washers - ill need to check thickness unless you remember?

If you rarely use the outer and aren't the sort that goes hammering into rocks then probably no need for a bash, you'll gain a noticeable bit of clearance too.

I've bent my big ring on a rock coming down from Helvellyn. It's still on the bike but i can't shift into it. I don't miss it and now use it as a bash ring. I will fit a proper one soon.

On my last bike I swapped the big ring for a bash guard and changed the middle ring for a size mid-way between the old middle and large rings which worked pretty well. When I changed bikes to the current one it was gratifying to see Specialised had thought along the same lines when they specced it as a 2x10!

cheers Ive ordered a raceface light bash 36-38T off ebay. Ill consider getting a larger middle ring if I struggle but as most said they dont miss the big ring at all.
good to share your experiences ta!
