Just looking at gradings on the routes in the Aiguilles Rouges above Chamonix. How do the grades compare to uk grades?
Eperon sublime is getting 5b in the French guidebook - is that similar to uk 5b?

Not at all... Use this http://www.ukclimbing.com/databases/crags/comptable.html as a rough guide for the first few routes, while being conservative. Then it's a matter of 6b is harder than 6a, is harder than 5+... You get the idea.

Edit: A couple of hours valley cragging would do to acclimatise to the grading

I may be wrong but the way I understand it, the French grades are the overall grades, not just the technical. So it would be more meaningful to compare them with the UK adjectival grades. With that in mind French 5b is the UK VS, 5c - HVS, 6a - E1, 6b - E2 and so on. This is very rough and ready and varies a lot. I haven't done the route in question, but so can't give any more informed input, sorry.

They should be approximately equivalent to UK sport grades, or climbing wall grades.

Of course, every area will have variances.
