will hanging on door frames help strengthen my fingers ? frame is about about 10mm deep, makes sense to me...

Yes. This is what people did before walls and fingerboards and such like.

I use the top bunk of a bunk bed. It's like a pull-up station with a bouldering mat underneath it!

I tapped the sharp edge with a hammer, made the experience

I do pull ups on my door frame quite a bit as I don't have a bar. I don't think it'll help my climbing as it's not my strength that holds me back. I use it more for shoulders etc.
Get something squishy and use it when you have a hand free, I've got one of these http://www.needlesports.com/Catalogue/Rock-Climbing-Equipment/Training-Equi...

Do some form of warm up for your fingers first as 8-12mm is a fairly small edge to be weighting with no help from your feet.

I used to do pull ups on door frames but that was was 20 odd years ago before I'd heard of deadhangs.

Can't see it not helping if you don't go mad and get injured.

Edit
Someone please remind me how to do italics on this archaic bulletin board?

Use angle brackets instead of square brackets.
