Hi

Can anyone tell me if the Via Ferrata routes around Sass-Fee are free to use.

Regards

Yes, the Mittaghorn and Jeggihorn VF are free to use.

The Saas Fee gorge descent is a guided thing which you're not supposed to go on unsupervised as the tyrolleans are dangerous without specialist equipment. I think I'm right in saying someone died a few year back after attemping it without a means of braking.

The Mittaghorn is straightforward scrambling and very picturesque

see link www.klettersteig.ch

which is currently saying

"Der Klettersteig ist GESCHLOSSEN
Kontrolliert 22. Juli 2013

which is odd as we did it after that date - although I'm sure someone here might more accurately translate it's precise meaning than Google

Anyway have a nice day out if you do it...(as ever) don't underestimate the time needed at the end to catch the last lift down!

Did the Mittaghorn on Thursday with a new dusting of snow which added a bit more interest (both to the route and bivi the night before), however still very straightforward.

Be aware that parts of the route are in slight disrepair with some of the bolts pulled and a couple of loose wire ends, but nothing too worrying (however we were moving together as went on towards egginer after the summit).

There was a fantastic via ferrata on the Jegihorn (c3000m)above Saas Grund (village just below Saas Fee) - good scrambling, a long and very hire wire bridge, giant suspended cargo net and plastic holds up a steep face just below the summit. Sadly, I think there was a rock fall which closed part of it but I would definately recommend investigating if it is still open. There is a lift that will take you most of the way up to the start and I think the lifts are free if you're staying in the valley.
