Planning a trip this month to the Dolomites (Cortina) doing mostly Via Ferrata, plus walking and easy sport climbing.

Driving down and camping so totally flexible - looking for suggestions of alternative bases as the long term forecast doesn't look great.

I fancy somewhere in Austria as it's enroute and gives me a chance to try out my (very rusty) German.

Grades 1-3 Via Ferratas seem to suit us and WW1 history is a definite bonus.

The Ziller valley is another option with ferratas and sport climbing. Sport climbing in Oetzal too with free topos available from the tourist office.

In case you didnt know, the german speaking areas use the word klettersteig as well as ferrata.

We did this one a couple of years ago - walked in from the Vogelbahn cablecar.

The descent to the NE isn't particularly enjoyable or safe due to scree, I'd go back down the main path if I did it again. Oldskool situation with newskool equipping

Any suggestions on campsites?

Ideally basic and relatively cheap, rather than family friendly holiday parks with loads of unnecessary facilities.

Hi Jenny, would also reccomend Oetztal. Did three VFs there last year. The same as you, we were on our way to the Dolomites and thought we would stop off there for a few days. Ended up staying for a week and again on the way home.We camped at a small site in the village of Huben. It was excellent, a lot nicer than the bigger site in Langenfeld nearby. Tourist info will give u a booklet with topos of the klettersteig which are all quite new looking. If you continue up the valley a toll road takes you over the Timmelsjoch into Italy.

Have a great holiday, Dave
