Walked up to Bowfell last year and it nearly killed me! Went up the band after parking at the ODG. Wondering if the walk from top of Wrynose might ne better overall? Either that or getting my younger fitter partner to carry me! What do people who havedone both think?

Long way from Wrynose. Anyway, it's not exactly far up the Band. Apply liberal doses of Rule #5.

In reply to Bob:

Try telling my legs it's not far! Is rule 5 about younger member carrying me?

Rule #5 HTFU (or MTFU if you prefer)

Oh dear, tried that but a complete failure I'm afraid!

Oh dear. Tony.

I went up Bowfell the other week. POP because for a change I paced myself.

Make sure your rucsac is as light as poss. Start slow, and do not go much faster, just keep moving.

Usually cycle up the valley and walk left from Rossett Ghyll, was really surprised how steady the Band was.

What you don't do, is try to go as fast uphill as boB used to

Wrynose is quicker for Shelter crags but no further along the ridge.

In reply to your original question, shortest/quickest route is up The Band.

However starting @3SS is a pleasant way up and not as "abrupt".

My personal preference would be to start at 3ss and go over the Crinkles to 3 Tarns then up Bowfell. You'd have to retreat the same way if you needed to get back to a car.

Another alternative, offering a circular route is up the side of Browney Gill almost to Red Tarn, then over the Crinkles to 3 Tarns, Bowfell, Ore Gap, descend from there or carry on over Esk Pike to Esk Hause and head back to Langdale via Angle Tarn & Rossett Gill.

But the isn't much difference in profile between that and The Band.

HTH

Are we talking about Bowfell (fell top ) or Bowfell Buttress (crag) ?

Good point.

I hadn't noticed it was in Rock Destinations.

Heading to the crag. I think your right, I will let my partner race up and just plod up at my own pace. Where did you bike to Rick?
 Bob 10 Jul 2014
In reply to Rick Graham:

I had some oomph back then!

To tmawer:

It's easy biking up Mickleden as far as the foot of Rossett Gill. Walk up the path that heads towards Angle Tarn then cut left.

Also as Rick says, trim things down: take one rack between you, that sort of thing.

As far as Bob says.

Good if you need to park at the New. Recently extra parking at Old so about equal effort walking up Band or cycling up valley. But bike wins hands down on return leg ( or some knee anecdote )

When you get close, the path splits and your legs will scream "take the lower path" don`t it`s a sucker punch, keep on up for another 100 or 200 mtrs and then you will start to angle in, it`s much much quicker than the lower path.

I reckon we took too much up last year Tony - and only ended up placing about four bits of it in Woolly Jumper.

We'll rationalise the rack in the morning (fewer cams, more codeine/naproxen). See you at 9ish

And just to be clear - I'm not carrying you!

Went up the band to Bowfell two days on the trot last summer. Stashed gear at crag. Saved 15 minutes on walk in the following day. Weather forecast was good.
