I must admit that this brought a tear to my eye.

Although it was a "coming of age" anthem for many gay and lesbian young people of my age, it also spoke to those of us who are "straight" but felt themselves different or out of step with the small town mentality of the places we lived. Jimmy still sings sweetly and looks great for his age.

Original version.

You leave in the morning
With everything you own in a little black case
Alone on the platform
The wind and the rain

On a sad and lonely face
Mother will never understand
Why you had to leave
For the love that you need

Will never be found at home
Pushed around and kicked around
Always a lonely boy
You were the one

That they'd talk about around town
As they put you down
And as hard as they would try
They'd hurt to make you cry

But you'd never cry to them
Just to your soul
No you'd never cry to them
Just to your soul

I can't really identify with the subject matter, but it's a belting song. I can see how it would have been very anthemic and magnetic for people coming to terms with their sexuality.

I was massively into Erasure when I was younger and was really touched by the lyrics in "Hideaway", Made me have a think about my own family, and how they would have reacted if I'd been gay (very small northern mining village. You weren't gay, you were a puff, or a faggot. or worse. I don't think they would have taken it well )

"One day the boy decided to let them know the way he felt inside.
He couldn't stand to hide it, his mother she broke down and cried.
Oh my father, why don't you talk to me now?
Oh my mother, do you still cry yourself to sleep,
Are you still proud of your little boy?
Don't be afraid, you don't have to hide away."

Sharon Corr and Dido's separate renditions on the sidebar...
In reply to Blue Straggler:

That electrelane version is pretty weak, cute chicks though.

Dido's version is good, not keen on Ms Corr's.

No, much better than that. And wee Jimmy singing STB on TOTP is a lot more subversive than TG making a racket and going "Look at us we're weird".
