Commonwealth games inspired and looking to get into the pool and do some lengths. Competitive spirit makes me want to do some racing. Anyone out there take part in masters events? Advice and tips?

Find a masters club to train with.

I train with a club and I've taken part in a couple of events, mostly just to get some times to try and improve on. I did come second overall in my age group at a recent event and won a bottle of wine but that was mostly because there were only 2 people in my age group

Taking part in the 3k Open Water Masters Championships next weekend.

Watching swimming on TV can be both inspiring and soul destroying if you know your own times for the same distances!

Yep thought that last night watching little Erraid getting her bronze in breast stoke only marginally slower than I can swim 100m freestyle!!!
