I've not seen any notice paid on UKC so thought I would flag up that one of the stalwarts of the N. Wales scene died recently and had a memorial service on Saturday in Bangor.

John Ellis was apparently climbing in the Moelwyns at age 12 (and that's going to be in the late 50's!) and climbing in the Alps at 15 (and that's also going to be late 50's!!).

Amongst his other achievements he became the head warden of the Snowdonia National Park, was instrumental in setting up the Llanberis MRT and was Chair of the Wales Mountain Training Board. His work was outstanding and always driven by the fact that he was a mountaineer.

But this was no boring committee man; he was out cragging to the day he died just before his 70th.

A great soul missed by colleagues.

Biped,

Ta. I'd missed those. Can't delete this post now you've replied, apparently.

But I am saddened that the thread you link to is 'archived' and won't accept any further posts. It wasn't that long ago!

So there is now no longer a live thread where people can share their memories of John Ellis?

Yes there is. This one.

Cheers! Didn't know what was going on there or why the original thread had been 'closed'. I can't imagine why it was archived so quickly.

John Ellis was a strong man and a good man with a gentle manner - though tough when needed! He's in my thoughts and memories.

He smiled a lot.

A life bloody well lived!

The 2nd linked thread was closed because it was posted in Off Belay, they don't stay open long. The first one is still open.
