I keep having music videos not playing, and this is suggested as one of the possible solutions.

I'm not very IT literate, I have Microsoft Office and Internet explorer on my laptop.

What browser are you using? If it's Chrome, you can press CTRL+H and then select Clear Browsing History, and then tick the "especially porn stuff" and click on "From Beginning Of Time"

In reply to Timmd:

Internet Explorer (if I remember correctly) has a little cog icon in the top right hand corner of the screen...which brings up a sub-menu. In the "general" tab, there's an option to clear browsing history there.

Remember to tick the "especially the porn stuff" box, and click ok.

The easiest way is to go here: https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/new/ and download/install firefox. Don't import settings from IE once you install it, start with a blank slate.

Once done after you've used it for a while and want to clean cookies you go history > clear recent history > tick all the boxes and hit go. Simples!

Plus the added benefit is you'll no longer be a walking malware server which you probably are now since you're using IE.

If you are using Internet Explorer, google Chrome or Firefox and use them. I can never get around how difficult it is to get anything running when I occasionally go back to IE. You seem to continuously have to answer questions along the lines of "Are you sure you want to browse the internet" at every turn.

If music videos no longer play and things slow up occasionally can I assume I probably have malware?

What is an effective and free/cheap way to get rid of it? Though effective is the main thing.

I'm running McAfee and nothing has been flagged up...

I would download a package called 'antimalware bytes" and run that. Used it before, it actually works with real and nasty viruses.

I'd also uninstall mcAfee but that's a different subject...

Still having the problem?

Have you tried Firefox or Chrome as suggested? Does the problem show itself when you use one of those browsers? Is it just the one machine or do all the computers (assuming there are more than one) show this problem?

Without knowing more about the problem it's hard to give meaningful answers or suggestions.

In reply to Bob:
Since the problem is very new, why would downloading google chrome or firefox be the solution?

It doesn't quite seem logical that I'd need to download a new surfer to fix a problem when I've not changed any of the programmes I'm running, other than Adobe?

In reply to Timmd:
It might not be the solution but it may very well provide more information which leads to the solution. You may have a corrupt copy of the IE Flash plugin, using Firefox or Chrome will use their plugin which if it works supports the corrupt IE plugin theory.

The "Adobe" update seems suspicious - there are fake installers around that look very similar to the official one. Did you update directly from the Adobe site?

In reply to Bob:
Right, could it also possibly indicate that some malware (if there is any) hasn't got it's grips on the new programme too?

I have a picture of some malware on my laptop steadily fiddling with more programmes so things slow up. I don't know a lot about IT though.

See my edited reply - I was doing that when you replied. If you've a bad copy of IE Flash player then it won't affect Firefox or Chrome.
OP Timmd 08 Aug 2014
In reply to Bob:
Yes, I bought it from the official website, I can now convert things from PDF to Word where I couldn't before, and have had confirmation emails, so I'm presuming it was the official site?

In reply to Timmd:

That's not Adobe Flash that sounds like the Adobe PDF software whatever they call it these days.
OP Timmd 08 Aug 2014
In reply to Bob:
Yes it is, but that's the most recent change before youtube videos stopped playing, is why I thought to mention it.

If that's (presumably not) a factor, would it most likely either be malware or a corrupted whatsit, IE flash plug in?

Try a different browser - you can delete it afterwards if you want.

In reply to Bob:

It seems that things play in that it doesn't say video error or whatever it did before,, but without sound.

?

 Bob 08 Aug 2014
In reply to Timmd:

By "it" I assume you mean Firefox or Chrome? So you are getting video but no sound. I assume that you haven't got sound set to mute? It has been known! Not that I would admit to anything like that of course.

In reply to Timmd:

Does the sound come out like it's underwater or no sound at all?

cheers

OP Timmd 08 Aug 2014
In reply to Bob:

If I play through google chrome there is no sound but no video error either, and I did check the sound levels to check I wasn't being stupid. ()

A quick Google came up with this: http://www.eightforums.com/sound-audio/22164-how-fix-no-sound-chrome-youtub...

The version number of the DLL may be different you'll have to check that yourself.

Thanks, I'll look into that when I've not been awake till half three the morning before.

In reply to help

In add remove programs uninstall adobe flash. Next time you go to a site with video it should prompt you to reinstall with a link to Adobe's site. If you get IE9 or above it should use html video rather than Adobe Flash for YouTube . Apple iPad uses html5 video since Steve Jobs banned flash.
