1. Anyone observed any fresh snow on the Scottish hills yet?
2. When do we think the first snows will arrive?

I'm not organising a proper sweepstakes this year (too much else to do!) but am following the subject with interest. According to the Met Office, Sunday could be a goer for Ben Nevis...

The thing is it can snow any month of the year on the summit of the Ben so it's kinda arbitrary.

In reply to CurlyStevo:

Of course — I meant first "proper" snow (however you want to define that!)

Snow that provides climbing conditions?

In reply to CurlyStevo:

Enough to quicken the pulse and fill you with some optimistic expectations for the coming winter

I like that definition!

It can b****r off for a few weeks yet please!
- I am leading on Ben Alder this weekend, Monar next, and then Torridon. Rather fed up of wet weather, let alone cold n' wet

In reply to Joak:

I think that is snow that settles for atleast a few hours and shows white in pictures of the hills.

By the defintion I'm going for October 25th.

I am driving up to the Nevis range on Friday to go skiing in order to win a bet. Unfortunately, I don't think the snow cover will be quite as good as when I was up in April...

Is Kinder in yet ?
James Jackson 13 Aug 2014
In reply to Dave Perry:

Totally. I climbed it yesterday. A bit melty at the top but generally OK if you don't mind tied-off screws and thawing turf.

In reply to Only a hill:

I know it's not Scotland but is Kinder in condition?

No sign of any snow yet. ...but I was a bit surprised tonight to see a little rowan tree with a load of red berries, as I trundled around Edinburgh's Queens Park!
A bit early isn't it?

In reply to dek:

Loads of trees near me (Glasgow area) have leaves going brown and my rowan in the garden has a good crop of berries.

In reply to Lawrence:

Yep, just tooled my way up kinder gates under light of the supermoon.
 chris_s 13 Aug 2014
In reply to CurlyStevo:

I'm betting on earlier than that. 27th Sept.

Really? I'm more shortsighted than I thought!

The forecast for Beinn a'Bhuird is heavy snow on Monday morning, with great accuracy the Met Office is forecasting only sleet on the adjacent Ben Avon at the same time (computer generated I presume?). While I take this particular forecast with a pinch of salt it would seem the general picture is suggesting snow quite soon. The wind doesn't look good for getting out on the hills this weekend.

Twitter informs me that snow has settled on the summit of the Ben.

Let the drytooling rantfests begin!

I think to satisfy "Enough to quicken the pulse and fill you with some optimistic expectations for the coming winter" we need to see a landscape picture of settled snow on munro tops taken from a distance even it it is a dusting!
