I actually read the Hardback two years ago but never got round to writing a review on Amazon or on here.
Then yesterday someone pointed me to the excellent review by John Appleby on his Footless Crow blog which pretty much sums up everything I got from the book.

Canvas of Rock is an excellent insight into a unique branch of UK climbing culture. The players, the intrigues, the squabbles, the eccentrics, the ethical conundrums ; each element fascinatingly framed within the context of the author’s journey through an ever changing yet always vibrant Northern climbing scene. In reply to Enty:
I agree - its an excellent book, great insights into hard trad, its proponents and its ethics in the 70's, 80's and 90's, very well written, no grandstanding by the author, and he treats the issues around risk and adventure in a fresh and intelligent way.
