Hi guys, thinking of buying one of the Alpkit Kraku stoves when the are available again. Does anyone know how well they perform, is it worth waiting for them to be in stock or to go with another brand? Cheers

From their website:

"Going through all kinds of adversity, Hornet FMS-300T won so many people`s love and favor. It is born for UL, It is born for the brave heart, It is born for extreme."

That's the stove for me!

Just had a look at this and www.ultralightoutdoorgear.co.uk are selling it for £50 yet Appkit only £25 well I assume it would if it was in stock.

Are they they same product?

Yes.

Karrimor isn't the same burner but the Fire Maple is.

Brilliant stove, seems to be very efficient with the gas (but I'm newly back to gas from petrol) and fits well with a small canister of gas into the Alpkit small titanium billy. Good value even at £50

Alpkit site says back in stock late autumn.

Will have a look to see if I can find it

Edit: not exactly the same but this is the one I saw. Item number 321267108329

Thanks guys, will check out the Fire maple and compare. Ive heard nothing but good things about Alpkit so may hang on
In reply to specticlay:
Alpkit actually say that it's made by Fire Maple, since that's a sign that it's from a pretty decent manufacturer:

https://www.alpkit.com/products/kraku

"Quality oozes from the Kraku as it is made for Alpkit by Fire Maple, who are rapidly becoming one of the world's foremost gas stove manufacturers."

http://www.fire-maple.com/en/productsinfo.aspx?pid=2

Alternative sources/reviews...?

https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=fire+maple+fms+300

I use a Karrimor Alpine stove, also a badge-engineered Fire Maple, in this case, the FMS-118:

http://www.fire-maple.com/en/productsinfo.aspx?pid=7

Yikes... that's now even cheaper than the £23 I paid:

http://www.karrimor.com/karrimor-alpine-stove-787087

[edit] hmmm... the Karrimor site claims it's titanium. I don't think it is; mine is stainless, which tallies with the Fire Maple description, and the Karrimor image, and the quoted weights; the FMS-118 is quoted at 148g, and the Karrimor at 168g; the latter has a piezo lighter.

Awesome thanks!! I do like the little Fire Maple, I will give the Alpkit guys a go when they are available but definitely keen on the others.
In reply to specticlay:

Hah! Alpkit have just previewed their new cookware, which includes a variant of the Fire Maple FMS-117T, the Ti version of the FMS-118 (aka Karrimor Alpine). This adds the pre-heat tube of the 118 to the Ti support of a 117T.

Sounds ideal for those who want to lose a few grammes.

In reply to captain paranoia:

The Koro is exclusive to Apkit and is the full titanium version of the Fire Maple FMS-118 / Karrimor Alpine. For a stand alone canister stove made from Titanium with a pre-heat tube it will be far cheaper than any available on the market.

The Alpkit Kraku is coming back with the rest of the new cookware range early October. Checkout www.alpkit.com/cookware for all the information and a chance to win a Kraku and a new style MytiMug.

We openly state these stoves are re-badged OEM products from Fire Maple.

The stoves are available from e-bay/Ali-express - they will cost you more on shipping, duty, tax, and have no guarantee. But you are welcome to buy from those guys if you want...

Hope this answers your questions,

Jay

Hi Jay,

Can you tell us what weight the Koro is? I notice the stainless steel version is stated as being 146g, so it must be pretty light in titanium! Sounds awesome.

Also, is it more compatible with different gas canisters? I know the Kraku has issues when connected to certain brands of canister.

Cheers,
Sam

Back in stock now, just snapped a BruKit up for £35. All the weight details are on the site now as well. Never had issues with Alpkit gear and the customer service is top notch.

124g
Alpjay 02 Oct 2014
In reply to samharrison7:

Hey - as Glyno already stated the weight is 124g - it will work with any screw top gas canister and so will the Kraku now. It was a problem with the screw thread that has been resolved.

My Koro https://www.alpkit.com/products/koro arrived yesterday and first impressions are really positive.

Boil time is quicker than my jetboil ti and it's only marginally heavier. The Koro is less efficient on gas but I can actually cook on it, whereas the jetboil is really just a water burner with marginal simmer ability.

No idea which one will be coming on the OMM with me yet although a quick bivi trip tonight will help me make up my mind... Highly recommended so far.

I think the Ti Jetboil is discontinued. Probably for a good reason... Ti doesn't conduct heat very well, so, if the HX is also Ti, I doubt if it will work very well...

(I'm happy to be corrected on either or both of these points).

> The Koro is less efficient on gas but I can actually cook on it

Worth playing with the 'volume control'. Certainly never set the thing to '11' (unless you're a reviewer trying to find something you can measure easily, even if that measure is, to most people, meaningless)...

Tom Beasley posted some interesting figures about fuel use and boil times with gas stoves at BPL. I find Tom's postings to be well thought-out and well researched.

http://www.backpackinglight.com/cgi-bin/backpackinglight/forums/thread_disp...

He shows that if you boil a litre of water faster than 12 minutes, you're probably wasting fuel. The exact figures will obviously depend on the particular stove & pan setup, and conditions, but the general principle holds; don't piss heat up the side of the pan to get the 'fastest boil'. If you can't hold your hand at the side of the pan, then your stove is probably putting out more heat than the pan can usefully absorb, and the excess is wasted.

The convention as I understand it is that lightweight Ti is great for short trips where weight takes precedent over fuel efficiency, being that you're not very likely to burn through your all your gas, whereas a slightly heavier/more efficient stove will save weight on long expeditions as the weight of the gas you're taking will dwarf the stoves.
