I'd appreciate a casual eye over some of my holiday snaps and advise which ones are worth keeping on flickr.

And how I could improve would be nice.

BTW only a little titillation in lightroom. I did not play with saturation levels as the polariser did a good enough job for me.

Cheers muchly

Best shot by far: "I've got a stick"

Just keep them all on - the're holiday snaps.

from the holiday shots (Santorini perchance) this is the standout one, the original one that most people wouldn't have shot

I'd have tried for a longer focal length for more perspective compression and tightened in on just the five central blue dresses. But it's good as it is. But play with cropping to just those five blue ones. Even crop out any evidence that they are on dummies PLAY with it.

This might have got more relevant attention if you had posted in the Photography forum

I note you're not unfamiliar with album collections, but have not grouped the holiday shots into one ???

Which camera are you using out of interest?

I'd say they're pretty good. Maybe consider adjusting your polariser (assuming it's circular) to make sure the sky isn't too dark;

e.g https://www.flickr.com/photos/the1lemming/15118286851/

Also when cropping or framing leave a bit of space for your main subject and try and keep the main focus point central;

The top of the condiment holder is slightly cut off in this one. It's minor but it would bother me if it was my pic.

Just my opinion. Everyone has a different style

A nikon D5000 + 18-105 lens.

With the polariser, I don't play with it often and not too sure how to dial it up for good effect. I thought I'd take it out to Rhodes to see if I could get some sexy sea and blue sky's.

Thanks for the comments

Sorry, I forgot to post the link for the condiment comment;

I'm looking at new cameras. If I get my redundancy tomorrow I might splash out

Very cute puppy.

When I'm on holiday with Mrs Turdus I'm often trying to take well composed landscapes etc, whilst she is happier with lots of shots with us in, with our bikes in, or even that seventies favourite - shots with our car in. Thing is, when we're going through photograph albums from a decade ago it is sometimes her photographs which can be more nostalgic, meaningful or interesting. If you see what I mean.

The condiment was in but when I straightened and cropped then the top got cut off.

If you get made redundant then may I suggest that you do NOT buy a brand new dSLR, but one a generation or two back. That way you'll get an excellent camera at a fraction of the cost. The money that you save can then be ploughed into the lens.

I got a Nikon d40, minus lens, for a mate a few years back off fleabay for under £100. The camera is 8 years old and produces fantastic results. You should see his skiing shots taken with my 35mm lens attached to it.

OK the d40 is quite a few generations back and is limited by today's offerings however in skilful hands, not mine, it is worth its weight in gold.

Little bugger is eyeing up my slippers and I now fear for their survival over the coming months.

I know what you mean.

However on my trip to Rhodes I took well over 2,000 images and whittled those down to 400 and of those I put a selection onto my flickr account. I too have lots of nostalgic shots to look back on which would bore the pants off those who were not there.

In reply to The Lemming:

I have to confess that we still print our photos and put them in albums. And then bore people with them anyway.

Really?

I'll see how long it take me to get a new job. I want to explore the possibility of doing event photography/professional photography. I've had my 450D for 6 years and it needs upgrading. If I have the money I will treat myself to a new toy
OP The Lemming 03 Sep 2014
In reply to Pete Dangerous:

Then maybe a d40 is a bit too old.

My d5000 is good but crap at taking movies. Terrible focusing.

Other than that, it's great at its main job of taking photos.

I'm deciding between the Canon 6D or 5D mk III. I'm not messing about!

They will do the job too.

Good luck with your new venture.
