I am hoping to plan a trip to Kyrgyzstan next summer with some friends mountaineering, hopefully in some less explored regions. Does anyone know someone with experience in the country who might be able to offer more advice?
Many thanks
In reply to ford23: In the unlikely event you are heading to the area East of Peak Lenin on the Kyrgyz/Tajik border, I was out there in 1998. Any info I have is probably well out of date but you are welcome to get in touch.

If you are heading elsewhere in the country then I'm afraid I can't really be of any help.

Read up on expedition reports. There were quite a few uk teams out in kyrgyzstan this summer, so reports will slowly turn up and there are plenty of reports from previous trips out there. These often show potential objectives and contain loads of useful information.

I went to the Kizil Asker region in 2009, which was great for new routing - i think the report + the ones before our trip (mainly led by Es Tressinder) should be on the AC or MEF website

Ha! Vladamir Komissarov - he was our fixer for a trip back in 1993. Real character. Shared a few vodkas and saunas at base camp.

Oh yeah. For the record - vodka + sauna + vodka + sauna + altitude = non winning combo!

Some students from Bristol went last year:

If the contact page on that website doesn't work, contact UBMC or UBES and they should be able to put you on to the guys.

We went in 2011 and a couple of friends in 2009 to the western kokshaal too. The area around there has had a fair few more visits since then and many of the prize summits have been climbed but there's still lots of mountains 5000m plus without ascents. You need to be prepared to do everything yourself though but on the plus side it was cheap. Less than £800 all in per person but with decent sponsoring. We used ITMC who were excellent and reasonably priced.

As for identifying summits, get the american alpine club map. The summits without names are less likely climbed but look at the AAJ reports as the mountains will often be referred to only as altitudes so it takes a bit of digging.

Hello,

This blog has been made for an expedition out in Kyrgyzstan right now. There isn't anything on it at the moment except links to the other blogs of the people who have gone (which are all worth a read as well), but if you check in a couple of weeks I'm sure it'll be jam-packed with all kinds of delicious mountaineering-flavoured goodies.

These guys are brilliant. if you are looking for guides or just a place to stay in the Karakol region I would highly recommend them. Kas speaks very good English and is a mine of useful information.

Drop me a line any time. I was in the Djangart in 2010 and also travelled there a couple other times for other reasons.

Hi,
I was part of an expedition there a couple of summers back. I can send you our report but if there is anything else you'd like to know drop us a line.

I have been there twice; most recently this summer. What do you need to know?
