I was writing a document using Word and hit something on the keyboard (probably Ctl+ something) that now means that on all Word docs all returns and spaces are shown by symbols. This is really a pain when using Word. Does anyone know how to reverse this procedure please?

There is a button to cancel this. On the home tab it is one left of the Styles section on the top row. It looks a bit like a giant inverted comma.

For reference, this mode is what allows you to tell why line breaks etc are behaving the way they do.

If you are doing anything vaguely complex, its a good idea to flip this mode on to make sure for example authors haven't used loads of spaces instead of tabs to align things etc, as when you change th font, line spacing etc then everything will get screwed up

That's very interesting thanks for explaining it.
